UVA Data Science Research Lunch and Learn Series: Kathryn Howell & Benjamin Teresa

Friday, February 15, 2019 - 11:30am

Richmond has the second highest eviction rate in the country, according to the headline-grabbing numbers from the Princeton University's Eviction Lab. And Virginia has five of the top ten highest evicting cities in the country.

At the RVA Eviction Lab researchers Katie Howell and Benjamin Teresa are exploring the data to determine what that means for the state and the residents who live there, or used to.

Different understandings of what "counts" as eviction lead to different conclusions about the scale of the problem and interventions to address it. Selecting a measure of eviction is not a politically-neutral decision, and so clarifying the underlying goal or purpose of why we are asking about evictions is important.

Join Howell and Teresa for a discussion on why they argue that evictions are simultaneously a result, cause, and indicator of urban inequality.

Lunch will be provided beginning at 11:30am and the talk is scheduled to begin at noon.

This talk is part of the DSI Lunch & Learn Series sponsored by the Center for Innovative Technology.
